PHOENIX — Arizona State University has joined a growing list of colleges adopting a clear bags-only policy at sporting facilities to better manage security.
ASU will begin enforcing the policy, which mimics a system in place at all NFL stadiums, Saturday at Sun Devil Stadium for the season opener against Northern Arizona University.
Backpacks, tote bags and purses will not be allowed into the stadium.
“The policies we are implementing ensure security can easily identify personal belongings to get fans through the gates and on to enjoying the game day experience and Sun Devil football,” athletics director Ray Anderson said in a statement.
Resealable plastic bags, no larger than 12-inches by 16-inches, will be allowed. Women can carry a single, small clutch purse into the stadium.
Also allowed: bottled water — if the factory seal hasn’t been broken. That’s a first at the stadium.
According to the policy, each person can carry one bag.
The guidelines also stated that necessities for babies usually carried in a diaper bag will need to be in a regulation-size clear bag.
Kickoff at the stadium, which has undergone a $268 million renovation, was scheduled for 8 p.m.
The University of Arizona put the policy in place last season.
